ISHTAR: How do you induce creativity?

Ishtar is one of the most ancient goddesses. She comes from Mesopotamia and was worshipped in fertility rituals.

To be creative, first of all, I have to have enough energy. I have to feel inspired and motivated or else I’m just going to want to binge watch or doom scroll on my couch.

I also have to have time on my hands. It’s very difficult to be creative when you’re busy. Boredom is a privilege that leads to the best ideas. I have to have enough time on my hands to let my mind wander. I can’t be overly focused on a work-related task.

Moving my body around really helps to induce creativity. Even just cleaning up my apartment is enough to get my body moving and get that blood pumping into my brain. Exercises like yoga, dance, and hooping really helps. Most of all, going for nature walks is the best strategy. There’s something about being outside that really helps inspire me.

The week or so before my period also induces creativity. PMS is awful, but the one good thing is comes with, is this sudden burst of ideas. It always happens that week-ish before my period is due. I think there is something spiritual about the menstrual cycle. So at this time of month is when my body is cued to turn inwards and go within.

Book reading induces creativity. This is actually why I struggle finishing books, because when I read, all of these ideas burst in my head. The more I read, the more I want to write. So in that way, I can combat a writer’s block simply by reading!

Tea brings creativity. Mainly, caffeinated tea like chai or matcha. But sometimes herbal tea is also helpful, if it’s a nice and warm cup.

And lastly, sometimes I just have to force the creativity out. If I’m feeling stuck, I just have to push myself to do something creative. If I’m having a writer’s block, I just have to sit there in front of my computer until I have something to type.
