Humans Love Stories

Humans Love Stories

Something I have been thinking about recently is how much humankind values stories. Most of us are either watching TV, reading a book, or listening to music — which all tell a story. Most of our lives revolve around stories.

Why do actors seem to make more money than doctors? Why do we idolize, worship, and praise celebrities but we hardly recognize scientists? Why is the entertainment industry so large and competitive while the medical industry is lacking? Is it really fair?

Doctors are treating diseases, scientists are curing and preventing them, but actors are making us laugh and singers are making us feel things. It makes you wonder which one is really saving lives.

It’s something that still connects us with the ancient world. Their myths, which we don’t even have original written records of, still survive to this day. Their myths are still being retold in movies, books, and songs.

We become so attached to fictional characters, we even have fictional crushes and fictional enemies. Even nonfiction tells some kind of a story.

But nothing compares to our own personal stories. There is nothing on TV, or on the radio, or in any book that can sum up your experience. Your life is far more complicated, intense, and intricate than anyone in Hollywood could write up. Your life is one of those things that you just can’t make up.

It makes me wonder if we are all just here for the drama, if our souls came into this world just to make up storylines and see what happens. Like we are here to not only make up our own stories but also experience everyone else’s firsthand.

We’re only making up a part of our own stories. There is so much else more that’s out of our control. There’s a wave that’s going to keep guiding us wherever it wants to take us. We can only play in a part in choosing how we react.
