We left off with the aftermath of The War. Zeus was a part of The Third Order, the third generation of deities. Zeus wanted healing for the world, which was recovering from all of the damage. He commanded himself to be the supreme leader, while giving everyone else roles to their best abilities.

Hesita (Vesta)
Zeus commanded Hestia to be goddesses of the home and hearth. In ancient times, the hearth was much more important than it is today in the modern world. The hearth is the fireplace that keeps the home warm and cozy – long before the invention of the heater. It was the center of the house, and families gathered around it, not only to keep warm but to be with one another.
The hearth is still vital today, perhaps in a more symbolic sense. It is the energy of the home that keeps households united, especially in an age where every kid has their own bedroom. It’s the living room, where families gather around the TV, and eat meals together and talk to each other.
Hestia is a modest goddess who veils herself, covering her head, hair, and body. She wears a plain gown. She is unmarried and without children – her duty is the home.
Vesta is the Roman version of this goddess. It seems that her role was given more attention by the ancient Romans, than the Greeks. The Romans had a cult called “The Vestal Virgins,” in which girls took an oath for 30 years to serve the goddess. They had to remain unmarried and celibate – but they were free to marry after their oath was up, around ages 35-40.

Hades & Poseidon
Zeus needed to give roles to his brothers – Hades (Pluto) and Poseidon (Neptune). Someone needed to rule the Oceans while the other ruled the Underworld. So, he took a blue stone and a black stone and hid them under each fist. He asked each brother to pick one at random.
Truthfully, neither of them knew what they wanted. As typical brothers, they felt quite competitive with one another. Hades wanted whatever Poseidon wanted, while Poseidon wanted whatever Hades wanted.
Poseidon picked a fist at random and it turned out to be the blue stone – representing the oceans. “YES!” He pretended to cheer, just to piss off his brother.
Hades took the black stone, determining that he would rule the Underworld. “Exactly what I wanted!” He lied, just so he couldn’t give his brother the satisfaction.
And so, Hades sunk down into the Underworld. However, it was completely empty and quiet – because mortals did not yet exist – to be sent here. Instead, there were endless supplies of precious metals and mined underground jewels. Unexpectedly, Hades became rich!
Hades also somehow took on a pet – a three-headed dog. This dog would help him rule over the Underworld. He named him Kerberos (his Roman name: Cerberus).
Meanwhile, Poseidon took on the seven seas. He created a trident as a tool to display his status. Poseidon was the type of guy with a lot of big feelings… he was loyal, sensitive, and spiritual… but also volatile, grudge-holding, and never hesitated to stir up an angry storm.
Poseidon fell in love with Amphitrite – they married and had a son, Triton. Poseidon would go on to have many other lovers and many other children with them.

Demeter & Hera
Demeter would be the goddess of harvest. She was very beautiful and delicate-looking, but her personality was sharp and cunning. She would have a daughter by Zeus named Persephone.
Demeter’s Roman name is Cerce – which is where the word “cereal” comes from. So, every time you eat a bowl of cereal, you can give thanks to Demeter!
Finally, Hera (Juno) would be the devoted wife of Zeus. Hera may be known for her jealousy, vengefulness, and snobbish attitude – but you would be like that too, if your husband was constantly taking on other lovers.
Despite her imperfect marriage, Hera is known as the goddess of marriage. Maidens, newly-weds, and wives look up to her in search of patience, dedication, and feminine power.
Mount Olympus
The gods and goddesses declares the top of Mount Olympus as their new home. And they would be known as the Olympians. In the next part, as the fourth generation is introduced, you will meet the rest of the Olympians.
Zeus was determined that they would rule the world in perfect harmony like no other deities have ruled before. They were the Third Order – third time’s the charm?
