Fastnachts 2020

Today I was with my relatives for the annual fastnacht-baking festival. Fastnachts are traditional Pennsylvania Dutch doughnuts made from potatoes. The dough is cut, rises, and then we fry it.

Traditionally they are eaten on “fat Tuesday” in preparation for Lent. We just eat them fresh off the fryer. And there’s always plenty of leftovers — this year there were about 150 which is actually a bit less than usual. The recipe has been in our family for generations, and we have evolved it now by adding ice cream to the mix (very progressive and forward-thinking of us!)

And awesome musical performances by uncle David on the flute, Priscilla on the uke, and Rob on the trap.
