75 Britney Spears Songs, Ranked

The legendary Miss Britney Spears is arguably The Top Dominatrix Goddess of pop music! She saved a dying genre and changed the music industry forever! Queen of controversy and center of conspiracies, Britney has been (and continues to be) battling against not only the media but her own record label making attempts to control and silence her power. Britney preaches the gospel of embracing one’s own sensual freedom that the world tells us to be ashamed of. Hardcore fans really do see “Godney” as a goddess, as channeling her energy brings magical empowerment.

Throughout her legacy, Britney has still managed to humble herself: staying true to her sweet and silly side, never taking herself too seriously (unlike most pop princesses.) Her bubbly persona is balanced with a dark side that she learned to lean on further into her career. With all the mistakes she’s made in life that have been publicly documented for the world to see, she never fails to rise above the drama. If you can look past the media’s manipulative overexposure, you are left with raw passion that even the shyest of us can embrace — because we are meant to live life to the fullest. Let her guide you into losing control and allowing the rhythm of your heartbeat to take over!

I’ve composed a list of 75 Britney Spears songs, ranked from worst to best. Of course I can’t include all her songs — only those that stand out to me, for better or worse.

#75 — I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman (Britney: 2001)

“All I need is time, a moment that is mine.”

This is the worst Britney song ever! It deserves special recognition because it is the absolute worst of the worst. We still love her, we actually love her even more for it!

#74 — Slumber Party (ft. Tinashe) (Glory: 2016)

“I think I see confetti from this potion.”

Britney is just not the same within the past several years. It’s not that bad though.

#73 — Pretty Girls (ft. Iggy Azalea) (Single, 2015)

“Is it true that these men are from Mars?”

Nahhh… still better than Slumber Party, I guess.

#72 — Perfume (Britney Jean: 2013)

“I’ll never tell, tell on myself, but I hope she smells my perfume.”

This song is so not Britney, at all! It feels like she is forcing insecurity and powerlessness. It’s not genuine and it’s not her style. But it’s really, really, really, catchy.

#71 — E-Mail My Heart (…Baby One More Time: 1998)

“E-mail me back and say our love will stay alive.”

This is one of her worst, most laughable and cringy songs. At the same time it’s also a fan-favorite because of how silly it is. “Everyone’s been doing e-mails,” Britney says in a ’90s interview.

#70 — Dear Diary (Oops!… I Did It Again: 2000)

“Diary, do you think that we’ll be more than friends?”

This is sooo cheesy, yet still not as cheesy as “E-mail My Heart.”

#69 — The Beat Goes On (…Baby One More Time)

“Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.”

This is a Sonny and Cher cover. Not bad!

#68 — Up N’ Down (Femme Fatale: 2011)

“You’re watching me like there’s no one else around.”

Big pop vibes. Not flawless but not terrible.

#67 — Why Should I Be Sad (Blackout: 2007)

“I’m tired of singing sad songs.”

This song is all over the place… yet great message! Yeah, girl! Why should you be sad? You shouldn’t.

#66 — Work B**** (Britney Jean)

“They gonna try to try ya, but they can’t deny ya.”

It’s strong and empowering… also messy and extremely subpar.

#65 — My Only Wish This Year (Christmas song: 2000)

“Santa, can you hear me? I have been so good this year, and all I want is one thing, tell me my true love is here.”

This song is lovely. But it’s a Christmas song, so you only wanna listen to it around Christmastime.

#64 — Make Me… (ft. G-Eazy) (Glory)

“Cause you’re the spark that won’t go out, my heart’s on fire when you’re around.”

Really not that bad of a song! It’s 2016 Britney so we don’t expect much of her past 2010 when we all had to accept that she would never peak again.

#63 — Inside Out (Femme Fatale)

“You’re the only one who ever drove me crazy, cause you know me inside out.”

Trying to say goodbye to someone you are insanely attracted to… awesome song but still lacking.

#62 — Get Naked (I Got a Plan) (Blackout: 2007)

“What I gotta do to get you to want my body?”

Perfect dancing song and probably should’ve been a single. But who is this ghost singer overshadowing Britney?

#61 — Mannequin (Circus: 2008)

“I cannot help myself, I’m just doing what I do.”

It’s a cool song but it’s a little freaky.

#60 — [I Can’t Get No] Satisfaction (Oops!…I Did It Again)

“And I try, and I try, and I try, and I try…”

She tried to cover Rolling Stones and didn’t necessarily fail! I like the introduction.

#59 — Freakshow (Blackout)

“Wanna see crazy, we can show em.”

It’s not the best of Britney, but it’s super catchy and still makes an awesome song.

#58 — I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll (Britney)

“So put another dime in the jukebox, baby.”

This is as rock as it gets for Britney…

#57 — From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart (…Baby One More Time)

“You didn’t hear all my joy through my tears, all my hope through my fears.”

Very, very sweet… very cheesy too…

#56 — (Drop Dead) Beautiful (Femme Fatale)

“You’re some kind of fine.”

Good beat and good production. Weak lyrics though.

#55 — Heart (Oops!… I Did It Again)

“Heart, I know I’ve been hard on you. I’m sorry for the things I’ve put you through. Please don’t you break on me, I need to make you see, it wasn’t meant to be.”

Aww, so sweet. She’s talking to her broken heart and telling it that everything is going to be okay.

#54 — How I Roll (Femme Fatale)

“Because I got nine lives like a kitty-cat.”

Super chill song.

#53 — Trip To Your Heart (Femme Fatale)

“Break these chains that keep us apart.”

This song is pretty trippy.

#52 — Til It’s Gone (Britney Jean)

“I try every night to turn the page, but daylight can confine me to a cage.”

This song is underrated and could’ve made a good single. The Britney Jean album was a major flop, but this one stands out.

#51 — Shattered Glass (Circus)

“My face is gonna haunt you all the time.”

Vengeful and strong!

#50 — Criminal (Femme Fatale)

“He’s a bad boy with a tainted heart, and even I know this ain’t smart.”

A lot of people don’t like the flute, but I love the flute.

#49 — He About to Lose Me (Femme Fatale)

“But I can’t overcome this chemistry.”

It’s upbeat and catchy yet steady and calming at the same time.

#48 — I Will Be There (…Baby One More Time)

“Let me make it clear you can put your trust in me.”

Cute, feel-good song.

#47 — Hold It Against Me (Femme Fatale)

“You feel like paradise and I need a vacation tonight.”

The lead single of what would be her last successful comeback.

#46 — My Baby (Circus)

“In love I fall so deep, so deep.”

Britney rocks the ballads. This is literally about her infant baby. It’s a very straight-forward song. She loves her child; she’s a proud mama.

#45 — Til The World Ends (Femme Fatale)

“If you feel it, let it happen.”

This gets me pumped!

#44 — Breathe On Me (In The Zone: 2003)

“It’s way beyond the physical.”

The beat is sick! Deep trance!

#43 — Soda Pop (…Baby)

“So show me what you got, just take a pop shot, and we will never stop-she-bop-she-bop.”

This song is super cute and addictive, just a little repetitive. It’s the PG version of partying: instead of alcohol, it’s soda.

#42 — Thinkin’ About You (…Baby)

“I spend my days with you… I spend my nights thinkinabout you.”

Dreamy 90s bop.

#41 — Girl In The Mirror (Oops!)

“There’s a story in her eyes, a lullaby of sad goodbyes.”

Beautiful ballad!

#40 — Outrageous (In The Zone)

“I just want to be happy in a place where love is free.”

YAAASSS! This song is funny.

#39 — Do Somethin‘ (My Prerogative/Greatest Hits: 2004)

“I see you lookin at me like I’m some kind of freak, get up out of your seat. Why don’t ya do something?”

Super bold and confident! Although she’s trying a little too hard to be hardcore.

#38 — 3 (The Singles Collection: 2009)

“Three is a charm!”

I don’t even know what to say… except… “interesting” …? Not in a bad way.

#37 — Me Against the Music (ft. Madonna) (In the Zone)

“I want to get in the zone.”

It’s me against the music, it’s JUST ME… just kidding, not just me. Fun fact: this was supposed to be a solo Britney song until Madonna came along and wanted to make it a collaboration!

#36 — My Prerogative (My Prerogative/Greatest Hits)

“People can take everything away from you, but they can never take away your truth.”

I really, really love this song. It’s strong and powerful. It’s about following your heart and not caring what other people think. This is a cover song but I wish some of the lyrics would’ve been tweaked.

#35 — I’m A Slave 4 U (Britney)

“All you people look at me like I’m a little girl.”

I love this song but you can also tell that she’s trying too hard. Just slightly too breathy.

#34 — Overprotected (Britney)

“I believe in taking chances.”

It’s about wanting to follow your heart but people around you are shielding you from the world.

#33 — Unusual You (Circus)

“Didn’t anyone tell you you’re supposed to break my heart? I expect you to.”

This song is incredibly sweet without being cheesy at all. It’s about questioning someone’s genuine nature because you are so accustomed to people who can’t be trusted.

#32 — Lace & Leather (Circus)

“Baby take a seat, eyes on me, this is my show.”

Super duper sultry.

#31 — Touch Of My Hand (In The Zone)

“Imagination’s taking over.”

Beautiful song and totally underrated! I was so excited to see her perform this at her Circus concert.

#30 — Gimme More (Blackout)

“If you’re on a mission, you’ve got my permission.”

So ironic — the more you play the song, the more it grows on you, and the more you want to hear. The more you listen to it, the more it gives you, and the more you want. Having said that, this NEVER should have been her leading comeback single after the head-shaving drama! (But I’m not bitter or anything!)

#29 — I Wanna Go (Femme)

“Lately people got me all tied up, there’s a countdown waiting for me to erupt.”

Hard to find any great hits past her 2009 Circus album, but this is her best song on 2011’s Femme Fatale. Successful attempt at dabbling into dubstep and keeping up with the music trends. Still ahead of her time, even after over a decade of music.

#28 — Radar (Circus)

“Confidence is a must. Cockiness is a plus. Edginess is a rush.”

Wonder if he knows he’s on her radar?

#27 — If You Seek Amy (Circus)

“Love me, hate me, but can’t you see what I see?”

All I can say is that this song has done what no other song in the world has done before and will ever be able to do. It’s clever. You have to give her team props for that.

#26 — Womanizer (Circus)

“Fakin’ like a good one but I call em like I see ’em. I know what you are, what you are, baby.”

Say “womanizer” five times fast!

#25 — Piece of Me (Blackout)

“I’m Mrs. Oh-My-God that Britney shameless.”

Bold and brilliant. But also the first song that had us like, “wait, is this Britney? What happened to her voice?”

#24 — Kill The Lights (Circus)

“They all wanna see what you’re made of, what you’re gonna do. Is life gonna get the best of you?”

This song makes you feel like a spy. It’s definitely the sequel to Break The Ice.

#23 — Out From Under (Circus)

“I don’t wanna dream about all the things that never were.”

Another great ballad from Britney. Very underrated. Focusing on moving forward, but someone from your past keeps trying to pull you back even though you know that you could never have a future with them.

#22 — I Will Still Love You (…Baby)

“Time will take us apart, but I will still love you, I promise.”

I like how this song includes nature — sun, stars, sky, moon, and all the seasons. Also, something about the tone is very nostalgic, a type of sound that really hasn’t been matched since the 90s.

#21 — One Kiss From You (Oops!)

“I don’t have to feel the heat of the sun to know it’s shining on me every day.”

Sweet and simple. The beat is a good song to do crunches to.

#20 — Blur (Circus)

“Where the hell am I?”

This is an extremely calming song, which is why I love it so much. You can say it’s about a hangover, sure, or you can get real deep and ponder how life is one giant hangover. Like, does anyone even know what’s going on?!

#19 — Mmm Papi (Circus)

“Stuck in the middle of it all. Too many people around me, can you hear me call?”

This song is so fun and cute. It’s perfect. Belly-dancing vibes.

#18 — What U See (Is What U Get) (Oops!)

“You’ll be lookin for trouble if you hurt me.”

Very strong and powerful, classic peak Britney.

#17 — Where Are You Now? (Oops!)

“I can hear your voice, the ring of yesterday. It seems so close to me but yet so far away.”

Britney slays the ballads. She captures that sadness of breaking contact with someone but still feeling stuck on them.

#16 — Don’t Go Knockin’ On My Door (Oops!)

“I can see, it’s no mystery, it’s so clear to me what we had is all history.”

Mega pop, super sassy, very intense. Love it. Peak Britney years.

#15 — When Your Eyes Say It (Oops!)

“I feel it, I feel the love coming through.”

This song is extremely calming and pure. It makes everything feel better. Eyes are such a fascinating thing; they really do tell the truth. It may sound strange to say, but eyes are one of my favorite things about a person.

#14 — (You Drive Me) Crazy (…Baby)

“You got that somethin, what can I do?”

Really torn between “the original” CD version and “the stop remix” radio version, so I’m just lumping them together as one.

#13 — Toxic (In The Zone)

“I’m addicted to you, but ya know that you’re toxic!”

Some people would call this her #1, but true fans know that even though this is a smash, Britney can still do so much better than this. Certainly one of her best, but certainly not her absolute best!

#12 — Boys (The Co-Ed Remix) (Britney)

“What would it take for you to just leave with me?”

Everybody likes a duet!

#11 — Break The Ice (Blackout)

It’s been a while…”

Greatest masterpiece of her Blackout (2007) album — so good that it even beats many of her classics and peak-years. I think this song is extremely underrated and should have been her leading comeback single instead of “Gimme More,” I think she would’ve been much more successful… Fun fact: Britney was in rehab when they were supposed to film the music video, so they made it an anime cartoon.

#10 — Everytime (In the Zone)

“Without my wings, I feel so small.”

I love the melody so much that I learned to play it on piano. One of her rarer songs that she actually wrote herself and shows raw honesty. Accurately sums up what it’s like to feel lonely.

#9 — Can’t Make You Love Me (Oops!)

“Don’t care about money, it doesn’t give me half the thrill to the thought of you honey, so tell me that you want me still.”

It’s kind of a beautiful song because it’s about choosing love over money, fame, and power. None of that matters when you cannot be with the person you love. The way the song was produced really captures the frustration that comes with this feeling.

#8 — Circus (Circus)

“There’s only two types of people in the world: the ones that entertain and the ones that observe.”

The Circus album was probably her best comeback album and I would call it her second peak. This song is really empowering because she is embracing the fact that her life is a mess, people gossip, most men are scared of her… but she refuses to feel ashamed. Instead of being bothered by people who judge her, she encourages them to join in on expressing yourself without worrying what others think. You can stand on the sidelines and judge the way someone dances, or you can join them on the dance floor.

#7 — …Baby One More Time (…Baby)

“Oh baby, baby, the reason I breathe is you.”

Absolute classic. Fun fact: the song was originally titled “Hit Me Baby One More Time” but they replaced the “hit me” with “…” because it sounded like domestic abuse. Another fun fact: The music video was entirely Britney’s idea; her team originally wanted to do a superhero thing, but she argued a school thing would be ~cooler~ and ~more relatable.~

#6 — Oops!…I Did it Again (Oops!)

“I’m not that innocent!”

Another CLASSIC! Flawless in every way. However, slightly overrated and overplayed, so it can’t be #1.

#5 — Stronger (Oops!)

“I used to go with the flow. Didn’t really care about me.”

What is more empowering than a song titled “stronger”?

#4 — Lucky (Oops!)

“If there’s nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?”

What a magical and pure song. She is beautiful with fame and fortune, yet her heart is still empty and unsatisfied. Personal fact: I used to sing “why do these bees come at night” — I was like five years old and that’s what I thought the lyrics were.

#3 — Sometimes (…Baby)

“All I really want is to hold you tight…”

This song IS SO PURE!!! It’s almost cringe-worthy, how sweet it is. It’s about having such strong feelings for someone yet they cannot understand because you are really shy and require a lot of patience. Sometimes you hold back from someone because you’re scared and need time.

#2 — Born To Make You Happy (…Baby)

“Always & forever you and me, that’s the way our lives should be.”

The keyboard is my absolute favorite part of the song and really the only reason it gets so close to #1. Why didn’t she use piano/keyboard in more of her songs, seriously? And the laugh/cry in the beginning makes the song, as well. All the passion behind the lyrics makes it so easy to sing to.

#1 — Don’t Let Me Be The Last to Know (Oops!)

“Don’t hold back, just let it go…”

This is peak Britney. Her peak was her second album. And this song perfectly blends her ballad abilities + signature pop sound. It’s strong and demanding yet still carries a hint of desperation. Good balance between sweet and sultry.
