Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; and the rib which the Lord God has taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Genesis 2.18-24
The Bible states that woman was formed out of man, from his rib. Women have one extra rib than men do. The ribcage guards and protects the heart, and therefore, man must let down his guard and open his heart in order to receive the blessing of his woman. And do to this, he must go unconscious and let go of his thoughts in order to allow God’s plan to follow through.
God saw that man was unhappy alone and could feel his pain. Man was lost, confused, and needed help. First God created the animals to assist man and make him happier. Man enjoyed the animals, but they were not enough for him. God saw that man needed a true connection, man needed someone to make him feel complete.
And so, God made woman, not out of thin air, not through the animals or the plants, but through man himself. And man could clearly see that woman was part of him: different yet the same. And throughout the generations, man no longer needs parents to take care of him, because he finds his wife who will take care of him. And then man cleaves to his wife. The definition of “cleave” is “to become very strongly involved with or emotionally attached to (someone.)“
Man is lonely on his own, even when surrounded by the animals. Not only is he lonely, but he needs help. He needs to be taken care of. He needs both physical support and spiritual direction. The Lord God Himself created woman for this purpose. God wants to see man and woman unite and become one.
The union of man and woman is divinely orchestrated from the heavens. It is a part of God’s plan with intentions to make man feel joyful and complete. But man must open his heart and let it happen.
