What about “merman”? — The term “mermaid” is considered to be the female-form, while “merman” is the male. They are essentially one and the same, aside from gender terminology. For the sake of this article, I will be using the term “mermaid,” but please know that this can apply to both!

Step 1: Determine why you want to be a mermaid

Why do you want to be a mermaid? It is for the aesthetics — are you trying to pull off a particular look? Is it for the way you want to appear and present yourself to others? Is is internal — a way of trying to better understand yourself? Are you looking for a community, a sense of belonging among the rest of the mermaids? Are you hoping to improve your confidence and self-esteem? What exactly is it about mermaids that attract you to them? Is there a particular trait you are hoping to acquire?

There are so many questions to ask yourself. Take out a pen and notebook, or your notes app, and jot down the reasons why you so strongly desire to be a mermaid. This will help shape your goal and solidify the manifestation process.

Step 2: Research the mythology behind mermaids

In order to be a mermaid, you first must understand who they are.

Further research can be done through online searches, bookstores, documentaries, and so on.

Step 3: Surround yourself with water

  • If you do not already live near an ocean or lake, make a point to visit bodies of water often.
  • Drink a lot of water!
  • Take baths.
  • Go swimming.
  • Learn to scuba dive.
  • Visit the aquarium.
  • Take walks in the rain.
  • Splash in the puddles.

Step 4: Get the mermaid look

This step is not necessary for all, but may be important for those who are hoping to re-create the mermaid aesthetic.

Youtube is full of makeup tutorials with makeup themes. The best clothing to wear as a mermaid is a bathing suit, which is why the beach is the best place to embrace the mermaid look. You should wear beachy clothes that are soft, comfortable, and breezy — like a cotton dress. You can purchase leggings or pants with scale-print to make you look like you have a tail. Mermaids feel most natural naked, and so prefer to wear clothing that does not cover much, that feels light and loose on the body.

You can purchase a mermaid tail on Amazon for swimming. You can also purchase a mermaid tail blanket for when you are relaxing at home.

Mermaids usually have long and wavy hair. Many places sell wigs or extensions to recreate very, very long hair. You can also simply grow out your hair and use products to create loose waves. Mermaids have all different colored hair, but commonly light blonde, or vivid colors such as pink, purple, green, blue, etc.

Mermaids do not tend to wear lavish jewelry, however, they love crystals! Wear crystal jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, rings, and bracelets. Some common crystals among mermaids include rose quartz, amethyst, emerald, lapis lazuli, green aventurine, citrine, carnelian, and aquamarine.

Step 5: Acquire the personality and mannerisms

The most important part is to always be yourself. Mermaids, like people, have their own, unique personalities. Ultimately, you should stay true to who you are. But these are tips that will help you lean into the mermaid persona.

Be confident and bold — Mermaids are aware of their beauty both in and out. They know that they are majestic and charming. While they still feel nervous and insecure from time to time, they are generally very fearless beings. They are up for challenges and do not shy away from danger.

Follow your heart — Mermaids put their heart’s desire on the forefront. These are beings who do everything from their heart.

View the world with curiosity — Mermaids come from an entirely different world, deep in the ocean. And so, they are very perplexed and fascinated by this one on land. They view it with eyes wide open, unsure of what to expect, enchanted and amazed by everything.

Have great revere for nature and animals — Mermaids feel one with the animals (especially dolphins and other sea creatures), plants, trees, and even the rocks, dirt, and soil. You should respect them, treat them properly, and even talk to them! Mermaids feel that everything around them has a spirit and soul. They treat animals kindly and take care of their environment.

Step 6: Decorate your home

Decorate your home to remind yourself of who you are — a magical mermaid!

Look for decor with themes of mermaids, the beach, and water. Find artwork, posters, paintings, etc. Fill your home with plants and miniature fountains.

You can also make a Mermaid Altar — a small table or dresser filled with objects that remind you of mermaids. You can leave out “offerings” for your spirit mermaids or mermaid ancestors such as a bowl of water. Use this space for reconnecting with the mermaid part of your spirit.

Step 7: Connect spiritually

Mermaids are said to be “magical” in a way that goes beyond human capacity. In order to be a mermaid, it is important to have a strong connection with the spiritual realm.

Pray and meditate often. Do hypnotherapy and guided meditations. Try to get in touch with your mermaid spirit guides or ancestors.

Mermaids are said to have originally come from the Sirius constellation. Do some research on “Sirian Starseeds” and try to connect to the Sirians.

There are many tarot cards and oracle cards you can buy that are mermaid-themed.

Step 8: Create a vision board

Either through printing and collaging, or on Pinterest, make yourself a vision board with all of the art, quotes, and photos that inspire you to be a mermaid.

You can take a poster board and hang it up somewhere in your room or living space that you will see every day. Find stuff online or in books or magazines, cut them out, and glue them together on the board.

If you use Pinterest, this is a great method for making your vision board online. Add to it often, and remember to also look back on it to keep yourself inspired.

Step 9: Talk to others about mermaids

Be vocal and expressive about your identity as a mermaid. Let people know how much you adore mermaids. Show them art and media that includes mermaids.

As you continue to research mermaids and their mythology, you will gradually learn more and more about who they are and where they come from. As you learn, pass on your knowledge and educate others.

Take 10: Consume mermaid media

There are so many famous movies and TV shows about mermaids — most notably, “The Little Mermaid,” “Aquaman,” “Aquamarine,” and “H2O: Just Add Water.” And many, many more!

Watching and reading about mermaids, even fictitious stories, keeps the magic alive and reminds you of who you are as a mermaid!

The Captain & The Mermaid: A Mystical Conquest” is a short and easy-to-read fiction novel, about a mermaid named Fuchsia.
