After five years of working as an animal care technician, I will be starting a new job next week as a formulations technician. I’m remaining at the same company, but will be working in a different lab.
This is a huge life change for me. Animal care was my first full time job which I started working at several months after college graduation. I started this job on the first week of September, which makes it a somewhat strange coincidence that this is the same time I am leaving.
I am lucky to say that I genuinely enjoyed my job for many years. Of course there were many bad days. It’s a very physical job, which has made me very muscular, but also has really worn me down. I’m on my feet most of the day doing a lot of heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and bending up and down.
What motivated me to stick with this job for so long was the animals. Taking care of them and keeping them in good condition made it all worth it. Although now I am at the point in which working with animals has become overwhelming and stressful, to the point that it’s hard for me to appreciate them.
Also what really motivated me to stay so long was the people. Plenty of people have come and gone, only a handful still here from the beginning. I’ve made some great friends and have even met people who truly changed my life who I will never forget. These kind and cheesy “tech nominations” I have received over my time here really make me smile!

🙂 Congratulations on getting a new job.
I am hoping that you can juggle work and blogging.

Cheers to you on the new job. Is that marmoset in the photo an animal you cared for? If so, how often do you work with primates?

Thank you!!! The photo is actually a magazine cutout that my friend left on my desk one day 😅 there are other locations that work with primates, but not at mine. That would be a very fascinating and incredibly intimidating experience!
