DAY 6: HESTIA: What makes a happy home?
Hestia is the goddess of home and hearth. She represents the fireplace of the living room; the warmth in which everyone gathers around and feels comfort.
A happy home is a place where you can relax and feel comfortable. It’s a space where you can let down your guard and just breathe.
A happy home should have a sense of both community and privacy. If you live with a big family, then there should be a sense of helping one another, but also having boundaries. For example, there should be the freedom to close the door and have space where you can be by yourself, even if that just means being able to use the toilet in privacy. And if you live alone, then I feel like you should have pets or something to take care of, that could even be plants.
I think the most important part of a happy home is an emphasis on comfort. There cannot be any tension in a happy home, whether that’s with your family or roommates. I don’t think a happy home is so much about decor or furniture, it’s really about the feeling that you have in your environment.
Of course a clean and organized home is happy, but I also want the home to feel somewhat lived in. You can have a clean and organized home without it looking like a hotel. I don’t need all the blankets to be folded up perfectly, I don’t need absolutely everything to be in the correct place, and I don’t need every single space in the home to look spotless. I feel like a house that’s too clean and sometimes bring just as much anxiety as a house that’s too messy.
