Summer Playlist (SIDE B)

Summer Playlist (SIDE B)

I have been making playlists for each season with songs that I feel perfectly encapsulate the season. This is my second Summer Playlist (see SIDE A here – this is from the year 2020.)

You can listen to Summer Playlist SIDE B on Spotify here.

For my seasonal playlists, I usually break down each song with a favorite quote, a meaning, and how it connects to the season. But for this playlist, I will let each song speak for itself. I will still give some explanation to my playlist, though.

My seasonal playlists are always put together with intention and flow. They are not randomly thrown together in just any order. The first song is the first day of the season while the last song represents the last day. I had to open this summer playlist with “Heat Waves” because of the line, “late nights in the middle of June” because this is where we start.

There is certainly a variety of genres because I like to keep it interesting. There’s a mix of pop, rock, country, acoustic, and electronic. There’s some well-known artists mixed with indie and obscure artists.

Summer is the “full moon” of the year – peak and heightened energy. The first day of summer, known as Summer Solstice or Midsummer, is the longest day of the year. The light has reached its maximum. From here on, the days will get shorter and darker. However, light will still prevail until fall.

Both spring and summer are the seasons of positivity. But with the days subtly getting darker, summer does have a little bit of sinister energy. While spring is the innocent child, summer is the young adult – more experienced and exposed, but still free and hopeful. (In case you’re wondering, autumn is the elder, and winter is the newborn baby.)

In this intense heat, we feel more relaxed, sluggish, hazy, and delirious. This playlist captures all of those feelings. It also has themes of traveling and going on vacation, drinking cold iced tea, being grateful for our blessings, swimming in the ocean, restlessness and insomnia, daydreaming, and melting away.
