Blogger Recognition Award #3

Thanks to Illuminating the Fool’s Mirror for the blogger recognition award! This is my third nomination! Please go check out this wonderful blog and prepare to have your mind expanded. It’s all about myth and media. The pieces are high quality and chuck full of fascinating information. Each post demonstrates true passion for writing.

  1. Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  2. Write a post to show your award.
  3. Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
  5. Select up to fifteen bloggers you want to give this award to.
  6. Comment (or pingback) on each blog to let them know that you’ve nominated them, and provide a link to the post you’ve created.

How it all started…

I first started this blog towards the end of college. I’ve always been a writer and I’ve had a few blogs throughout the years. I would always end up deleting them, feeling like my posts weren’t mature or professional enough. But once I graduated, feeling more confident in my abilities and receiving more positive feedback, I was determined to stick with it. I really feel like I have grown as a writer in the past few years.

As for picking a name — I wanted something with my own name in it so that way I could feel free to write about practically any subject. I also wanted to add a personal touch. I chose “lotus” because of what the lily pad flower symbolizes: growing in the mud, getting dirty, yet rising above it all beautifully and gracefully. Something that always bothered me about social media was how we are pressured to showcase the highlights of our lives and make ourselves look good. For me, I wanted a space where I could be honest, a place to document not just the highs but also the lows. I think that’s what helps fuel creativity, by acknowledging both the good and the bad.

Advice…

  1. My first piece of advice to new bloggers is keeping consistency. When you first start a new blog, it’s almost like a “high,” and you can become addicted to that fresh feeling of starting over with a blank canvas. And then you may become quickly frustrated when you aren’t getting enough views, or likes, or follows… or you may suffer writer’s block. Just keep going. It’s okay to take breaks, it’s okay to slow down, but don’t stop. You can always go back and delete certain posts. But keep moving forward because your consistency will bring a great sense of accomplishment.
  2. My second piece of advice is don’t be afraid to get dark. People appreciate honesty because it’s so rare. If you are going through a hard time then you will be surprised to see how many others can relate and are here for support. The strongest creativity comes from the darkest places. Use your pain for good!

  3. Great advice, and I love reading the story of how you arrived here! I had wondered where the “lotus” came in. That’s such a good point, that honestly sharing both the dark and the light within ourselves is better than showing only one half.
